Please copy this e-mail and keep it in your notes and develop
your calendar to keep you on track this semester. This is also on D2L.
I am excited to be teaching Math 0997 on-line. My top priority is doing
everything I can to help you be successful in Math 1001. I am sending this
e-mail out a few days early. If you want, you can get a head start and look at
some of the material that we will be covering. If you will, please reply
that you received the e-mail. I also as you to send me your cell
number. You should check your e-mail at least once every day to keep
current about what is required. One of the most
important ways you can help me help you is to answer emails from me promptly. I
will be using CATMAIL with EGSC exclusively. We can also communicate with text
and cellphone.

For now, here is a quick
list of things you should do the first week of class or sooner:
1. Your first assignment is to register for the free MyOpenMath Website you
will use to complete required homework and take tests. You may register by
clicking on
https://www.myopenmath.com/ and completing the information with a login name
that you pick and a password and the course ID 52171. For complete
instructions click on http://faculty.ega.edu/facweb/bbrown/MyOpenMath.htm
If you do not complete the assignment by Friday
August 23, you may be dropped for non-attendance. Note: You may have already
done this because you are also in my Math 1001 Class.
2. Your second
assignment will be to check in with me on a short Zoom Video Conference to check
your wireless network. I will be using Zoom Video to provide additional
tutorial help if you have questions during the semester. If you are in my
support class, we will also use a one-hour video conference every week in which
you may ask questions. It will be recorded so that those who might not be able
to attend during that hour can see what we covered. You can also send questions
to be answered if you can not make the conference. Please let me know what
hour period on Thursday afternoon would be best for you. Send me your choice:
1-2 pm, 2-3 pm, 3-4 pm, 4-5 pm, or 5-6 pm. If you can’t do any or some, let me
know. If you can’t meet the time ultimately chosen, you can send in questions
and get the answers on a recorded video. Please respond immediately
after you get this email, and let me know your preference and your cell number
if you will.
3. Login to My EGSC
http://ega.edu/ and find the links to your EGSC email account and the
GaView D2L Web Site. In D2L, access the course name “Quantitative Skills &
Reason Support Section W Fall 2019 CO”. Look at the contents page and you
will see links to my personal web page, and links to the Syllabus, A Weekly
Schedule with links to videos, notes for each section, and other resources for
the course. I will, in a separate e-mail, send out the notes for first two
weeks in case you are not listed on D2L yet.
4. Textbook and Required Homework - You don't have to buy a traditional printed
textbook for the course. A free digital copy is available by clicking on
Download Free Math in Society Textbookto view or right clicking on the link
and selecting “save target as” and downloading to your computer.
My experience in past semesters has conclusively shown
that if you do not do the homework (essentially all of it), YOU WILL NOT PASS!
Please decide now that you will do all of the homework and also get help from
me.
5. Download and read the
syllabus carefully. Print a copy and keep it close to hand. (It can be found on
D2L and on my web site.

6. You can actually manage everything except homework and tests by using
the Class Schedule from the Quantitative Skills & Reasoning website:

Course Schedule and for each week it will have the videos you should view for
that week and the homework you should complete. The videos required for the
first two weeks are available now. I will be adding video links for the
remaining sections every week.
7. Watch Videos for First Week and begin working on the first sections of
homework listed for the week in the MyOpenMath web site. Be sure to find
a quiet place to watch the videos. MAKE SURE TO TAKE NOTES WHILE YOU WATCH THE
VIDEOS as you would if you went to a classroom! This is where I believe most of
the learning happens in the course as well as doing the HOMEWORK problems! You
can print the basic class notes from the D2L website and take notes on my notes.
Or, just start with a blank sheet of paper it's up to you how you want to do
this. Be sure to keep a organized notebook with your class notes in it. You may
want to use head phones when viewing the videos if necessary. You of course can
view the video lectures as many times as you want, and they are available 24
hours a day 7 days a week. I would appreciate any feedback from you on any part
of the videos including requests for more explanations or questions you may
have.
8. A Capable Calculator Is Central To Success! - The TI-30XS
Multiview is quite capable of the calculations you are required to do for the
course including those involving functions and statistics. Without it you will
not be able to do the required work in a timely manner. It is very inexpensive
and can be found at Walmart, Amazon, eBay, and other stores. I bought one for
about $16. Those who are not proficient with the calculator will not do
as well on tests. If you already have a more expensive TI-83/84, it will do
everything and more.
As we progress through this semester, I want to explore every avenue to help you
all succeed. Please contact me by e-mail for most requests. If you have
an urgent question, call me on my cell phone. I want to explore ways to
communicate including holding individual tutoring sessions ZOOM Video
Conferencing. You may also take a photo of a problem and e-mail or send it by
your cell phone. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.
Last semester, ZOOM Video sessions proved to be very helpful for
those who requested them.
