Descendants of Tolliver Brown

Generation No. 1

1. TOLLIVER7 BROWN (ASA6, BENJAMIN5 BROWNE, HOWELL4 BROWN, THOMAS3 BROWNE, JOHN JR2 BROWN, JOHN SR1) was born 1805, and died 1876. He married ANN HALL. She was born 1810 in Emanuel County, GA.

Notes for TOLLIVER BROWN:

There is speculation that Tolliver Brown may be the grandson of William Brown who came to America on the ship Britannia in 1772.[Brown 2003.FTW]

The Brown family traces their ancestral roots back to Norman origin. The Brown name first appeared in ancient medieval records in Cumberland , located in the English and Scottish Border Ridings. The Brown family name was recorded in the following counties, which can be used as a starting point for further investigation into these records held in the British Museum. DEVONSHIRE, HEREFORDSHIRE, and

LANCASHIRE

Five of Toliver's sons James F., Asa, William Young, and Samuel Jordan served in the CSA 48th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. The Jefferson Volunteers, was formed in early March 1862. the regiment served in Wright's Brigade in the army of North Virgina. The Company took part in the Seven Days Campaign, 2nd Manassas, Harpers Ferry, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, siege of Petersburg and Appomattox. Casualties in the 48th Georgia were extremely high. At Gettysburg the regiment lost 55% of their effective numbers alone. All survived the war but it is believed that Asa was wounded and recovered, and Samuel Jordan lost a leg. You can read about the exploits of Company E, 48th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, of the Army of Northern Virginia in John Zwemer's "For Home And The Southland. John Zwemer's book is a history of the 48th Georgia Infantry Regiment.

Patrick served in the CSA but we haven't determined what regiment. Patrick was born in 1840 otherwise we know very little about him.

[Notes provided by Samuel Edward Brown]

I believe that Toliver Brown was the son of Asa Brown for the following reasons:

Asa is listed in the 1802 tax digest for Jefferson County. Toliver was born in Jefferson County in 1805.

Asa was listed in the 1820 Jefferson County census and Ester was listed in the 1830 census. Asa died in 1829 and Esther in 1840.

Zacheus Brown was the son of Asa Brown and Esther Elizabeth Mayo Brown. Zacheus had property adjoining Toliver's in the 83rd military district. Zacheus witnessed a land survey for Toliver in 1844. Louisa, a sister of Zacheus, married Thomas Hall. Toliver married Ann <Hall>.* Toliver named one of his sons Asa. In the 1850 Census, Toliver is listed as 45 years old, so I have made the assumption that he was born in 1805. In the 1820 census, Asa had 2 sons who were 10-15 years old.

In the book titled "Persons Entitled to Draw in 1827 Land Lottery", Toliver Brown is shown as a single man entitled to one draw in the 83rd or Capt. Marshalls District.

On 11/26/1868, Toliver granted deeds of land to sons Asa and William Y. Brown. (Deed Book A p. 447 and p. 449. On 10/30/1869, Toliver and Ann Brown deed land to Samuel Jordan Brown. (Deed Book B p. 113)

* A cousin saw a handwritten note in the archives next to Anne's name suggesting that her maiden name was Hall. Certainly not proof.

Notes for JAMES F. BROWN:

[Brown 2003.FTW]

He is buried in Nails Creek Baptist Church cemetery, Bartow, Ga. (just off the Wrightsville-Bartow highway at the Johnson-Jefferson county line)

James was sometimes called "Jim Cat". That name alone makes your mind wonder but considering what is said to be on his grave maybe he had a lot of Toliver in him?

Inscription on gravestone: We'll shed a tear to memory dear

Upon his peaceful grave

And trust when he get over there

That God his soul will save.

He was a member of Company E, 48th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA, Jefferson Volunteers. He enlisted as private Mar. 4, 1862 and was discharged at Richmond, VA June 17, 1862. It is generally believed that he lost a foot in combat.

Jefferson County, Ga was created in 1796, and the town of Louisville was run by commissioners prior to 1902. James Field Brown served as a town commissioner in 1891 and 1896.

Notes for NANCY ELLEN DONALDSON:

[Brown 2003.FTW]

Nancy Ellen Donaldson (shown as Helen rather than Ellen in one record) was born in a small community called Donaldsonville near Wrightsville, GA. It is assumed the location was named after her family.

There is some questions as to the number and name of Nancy's children.

Children of JAMES BROWN and NANCY DONALDSON are:

i. WILLIAM J.9 BROWN, b. 1853.

ii. THOMAS M. BROWN, b. 1855.

Second marrage to sister of Mary Brown.

xvii. JOHN GORDON BROWN, b. 07 Apr 1877; d. 04 Jan 1934; m. (1) NANCY PRICE; m. (2) ANNA LEE BEDGOOD, 08 Jan 1898, Jefferson County Georgia.

Notes for JOHN GORDON BROWN:

[Brown 2003.FTW]

John Gordon Brown married Anna Lee Bedgood and fathered 6 children. Around 1912-1913, he ran off with Nancy Price, Anna Lee's cousin, dropped the name "Brown", and finally settled in Twiggs county and fathered 5 or 6 more children. He now went by the name John B. Gordon. His family has copies of his birth and death certificates which match the information recorded in the family bibles kept by the first Brown family and by the Gordon family.

3. ELIZABETH8 BROWN (TOLLIVER7, ASA6, BENJAMIN5 BROWNE, HOWELL4 BROWN, THOMAS3 BROWNE, JOHN JR2 BROWN, JOHN SR1) was born 1836, and died 19 Sep 1918 in Johnson County, Georgia. She married (1) JOSEPH HALFIELD 1860. She married (2) BENNETT POWELL 08 Mar 1860 in Jefferson County Georgia. He was born Abt. 1929, and died in Johnson County, Georgia.

Notes for ELIZABETH BROWN:

[Brown 2003.FTW]

In 1860 Elizabeth Brown married Bennett Powell. Bennet Powell and Elizabeth Brown had no children.

Gertrude Brown continued to live with Toliver and Ann Brown. Gertrude is listed with them in the 1860 and 1870 Jefferson Co., Georgia census. Gertrude always used the name Gertrude Brown. I had thought that she might be the youngest child of Toliver and Ann Brown; however, the picture mentioned below stated that Gertrude was the daughter of Elizabeth Brown Powell. I do not know if Elizabeth first married another Brown or if she did not marry Gertrude's father. Joseph Halfield may be Gertrude's father however no solid proof has been found.

In 1915, a picture of Elizabeth was taken in Baldwin, Florida at the home of her daughter, Gertrude Coleman, with Gertrude and her daughter, Mrs. J. A. Clark and her daughter, Lucille. The picture shows 4 generations of Browns.

In the 1870 census for Johnson County, Georgia, Bennett and Lizzie Powell are listed in the 56th district.

No children are listed with them. Gertrude is with Toliver and Ann Brown in Jefferson County, Georgia.

In the 1880 Federal Census for Johnson Co., Georgia, Bennett is listed as 54 years old and Elizabeth as 44 years old. There were no children listed with them. Elizabeth Brown and Bennett Powell had no children.

Elizabeth Powell's will is in Johnson Co., Georgia, p. 195, Will Book A.

He married (1) ELIZABETH FIELDS. She was born 1839. He married (2) ELLEN LAWSON Aft. 1875, daughter of ROGER LAWSON and SARAH MARSH. She was born 29 Aug 1849, and died 26 Aug 1931 in Lyons, GA.

5. WILLIAM YOUNG8 BROWN (TOLLIVER7, ASA6, BENJAMIN5 BROWNE, HOWELL4 BROWN, THOMAS3 BROWNE, JOHN JR2 BROWN, JOHN SR1) was born 1842, and died 05 Oct 1914 in Bartow, Georgia buried in Bartow Cemetery. He married CALCY PRITCHARD 1861. She was born 1840, and died 20 Apr 1911 in Bartow, Georgia buried in Bartow Cemetery.

Notes for WILLIAM YOUNG BROWN:

[Brown 2003.FTW]

W. Y. Brown enlisted on March 4, 1862 as a private in Company E, 48th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. Surrendered at Appomattox, VA April 9, 1865. He can be found on several rosters but he is also on the roster in a book written by John Zwemer. The title is "A History of the 48th Georgia Infantry Regiment For Home and the Southland". The author is John Zwemer. On the next printing (2001) there is suppose to be a picture of W. Y. Brown holding grandson Hugh Palmer.

Serving with W. Y. in Company E were brothers James F, Asa, and Samuel Jordan. There is no mention of Patrick serving with his brothers?

W.Y. Grave marker shows his birthday as 3/31/1840, however, it is may be wrong as his brother Patrick is born 5/31/1840. One or the other is incorrect.

Notes for CALCY PRITCHARD:

[Brown 2003.FTW]

Calcy Brown is the name on her grave stone and her birthday is shown as 8/17/1835. Her maiden name is listed as Pritchard, Prichard, and Pritchett in different records. Most in the Brown family think the spelling should be Prichard.

Her first name is shown in various places as Calcy, Calcis, Calcie V, and Caldis. We don't know if this is spelling errors by officials or if they are different people. In the 1850 Emanuel Count Census a Rowland and Seally Pritchard are shown to have a daughter 12 years old with the name of Calcy.

Lucelle Brown Thomas said Calcy was from Adrian, Georgia. More research is needed to clear this up.

1850 Census of Emanuel

Rowland Pritchard 62; Seally 54; Louiza 23; Brinson 20; July Ann 18; Marcus 16; Caroline 14; Calcy 12; Mathew 10; and Jackson 8. (I think there was an older brother Ashley abt 24 but married in 1850 to Elzear Coleman).

Some of Platte River Brown Sr's children think Calcy had American Indian blood. If so is she from one of the Tribes that hunted and inhabited the area around Louisville, Ga (Creek and Cherokee) in the early 1800's?; Or, was her mother from one of the western tribes?

Calcy named one son Platte River. Can we assume since it is an unusual name she got it from one of the Platte River's in the west. The South Platte River starts in Colorado and joins the North Platte River, coming from Wyoming, to form the Platte River in Nebraska. The Platte River runs into the mighty Missouri south of Omaha, Nebraska. The Platte River Road was the path along the Platte River in Nebraska that over 500,000 emigrants traveled over on their journey westward.

Did Calcy's mother meet her father in this area or was it taken from a dime novel of the western frontier?

Children of WILLIAM BROWN and CALCY PRITCHARD are:

i. ELANOR9 BROWN, b. 1861.

ii. ELISON BROWN, b. 1866.

iii. HARRISON C. BROWN, b. 1862.

6. SAMUEL JORDAN8 BROWN (TOLLIVER7, ASA6, BENJAMIN5 BROWNE, HOWELL4 BROWN, THOMAS3 BROWNE, JOHN JR2 BROWN, JOHN SR1) was born 1845, and died 1917. He married JOSEPHINE IVEY 08 Apr 1869 in Baldwin CO, GA. She was born 1849, and died 1918.

Notes for SAMUEL JORDAN BROWN:

Was a Private in the Civil War. Enlisted March 4, 1862, discharged, disability, at Richmond, Virginia July 18, 1862.

[Brown 2003.FTW]

In Deed Book B of Jefferson County, Georgia. Toliver and Ann Brown sold Samuel J. Brown 200 acres for

$318.50, located on page 113-114. The date was 10/18/1869. This is the year Samuel Jordan married Josephine Winnefred Ivey.

Samuel Jordan Brown enlisted as private in Company E, 48th Georgia Regiment, Army of Virginia, March 4, 1862 and was discharged , disabled at Richmond, VA July 18, 1862 after being wounded.

S. J. Brown also served in Co. H 2nd Georgia state line (militia) and filed a pension in Baldwin Co., Ga. Colonel James Wilson was commanding officer.* Company H fought in the Battle of Atlanta and in Jonesboro, GA. In the battle of Jonesboro over 100 out of 200 men were wounded or killed. At Kolb farm at Kennesaw mountain there were over 80 casualties. Family stories say that he was wounded in the leg or foot in the Civil War. A picture of Samuel Jordan in later life shows a below the knee amputation of his right lower leg.

He married in 1869 and lived on the land of Josephine Ivey in Baldwin County, Ga.

He is buried next to Josephine Ivey Brown in the Camp Creek Primitive Baptist Churchyard in Milledgeville, Ga

He was a minister and superintendent of schools in Baldwin County, Georgia.

Notes for JOSEPHINE IVEY:

[Brown 2003.FTW]

At the death of her father James Ivey, Josephine received the land that her father's home was on as her share of his property. She sold the property in 1916. I believe that all of her children were born in this house which still stands in 1999 at 16 Grace Weaver Road, Milledgeville, Georgia.

During the Civil War, Sherman's troops spent the night on James Ivey's plantation. Mary Elizabeth Ivey was upstairs with scarlet fever. Josephine was put upstairs with her and the soldiers were told that both had scarlet fever.

Josephine and Samuel raised a grandson , James Josey Salter, after the death of his mother Essie Brown in 1900.

Children of SAMUEL BROWN and JOSEPHINE IVEY are:

20. i. SAMUEL JAMES9 BROWN, b. 1879; d. 1945.

Notes for GERTRUDE BROWN:

[Brown 2003.FTW]

In the 1860 census for Jefferson County, Georgia, Gertrude is living in the house of her grandfather, Toliver Brown. She is listed as Needa age 6. Elizabeth Brown, Gertrude's mother, married Bennett Powell in 1860.

In the 1870 Census, she is still listed with Toliver and Ann Brown, but now as Gertrude, age 16. We haven't determined who her father was or if Elizabeth was married. Gertrude was six years old when her mother married Bennett Powell and didn't live with her mother after the marriage. Gertrude always used the Gertrude Brown. It is possible she married a person with a last name of Brown but that seems like a long shot.

While some may think Gertrude was Toliver and Ann Brown's daughter a photo made in 1915, owned by Ed Brown a descendent of Samuel J. Brown, is labeled as four generations of Browns. In the picture are Elizabeth Brown Powell, with Gertrude and her daughter, Mrs. J. A. Clark and her daughter, Lucille.

I think her child's name was Lonnie.

Notes for WILLIAM WESLEY COLEMAN:

[Brown 2003.FTW]

Notes for ANNIE EVELYN BROWN:

[Brown 2003.FTW]

Annie Evelyn Brown died on July 1, 2000. She never married but that is not to say she didn't live a full and happy life. She moved to Washington DC in her late teens. Like most people in the area she worked for the U.S. Government. She also lived for a period of time in California and Nevada before returning to Washington DC. During this time she did her best to cheat father time by changing her birthday on official records. When she finally retired she had a hard time convincing the Social Security Administrators of her correct age. After retirement she moved to Savannah to be near her younger sister Lucille and her children.

Aunt Evelyn was loved and cared for by her Savannah relatives for twenty-five plus years. At her funeral her niece Joan Thomas Schmidt wrote and submitted the following:

"Annie loved birds

And flowers

And kitty kats

She loved people

Never wanted to be alone

She loved dancing

And laughing and hugging

She was big hearted

Would give the shirt off her back

Even to a stranger

God has taken her home

It was her time

It was God's plan

Will miss you Annie

Gone from this earth

To the great heaven above

Welcomed by God's extended hands

No more suffering

No more pain

God bless you Annie

You were loved by all"
