Notes for JAMES ROBERT NELSON:
Only one Robert Nelson occurs in the tax lists of Somerset Co Md, which exist from 1723 to 1759. "He lived in Mattapony Hundred and first appeared in the household of William Nelson in 1739, indicating a birth date of about 1723. He occurs also in 1740, the last list before that part of Somerset became Worcester Co MD. Episcopalian church record of his marriage and births of three children indicates that the family was Episcopalian. He served as a sergeant in Capt. Adam Spence's Co of "Somerset" county Militia in 1748.
It is not known when he moved his family to Lancaster County, SC but W. Jay Nelson states: James, Daniel, William, Robert and other Nelsons entered land in SC away back-- 1774-1790TM Robert appears in Lancaster Co. as early as 1772, as shown by land survey records.

Mary Elizabeth Milbourne, oldest of the seven known children of Thomas (d1774) and Deborah Milbourne, was born in Somerset Co Maryland, later Worcester Co and moved with her husband, Robert Nelson, to Lancaster Co South Carolina, where she is buried at the Shiloh Church Cemetery.

Daniel Nelson, b1796, made application in 1855 for a pension for the Revolutionary service of his father, William, born 1752. This pension shows the birth and death dates of William and his wife Mary Cousart and the birth dates of their surviving children: Robert, 1781; John, 1784; Abel, 1786; Thomas, 1788; William, 1791; Andrew, 1794; Daniel, 1796; Nancy (Lettice), 1799. Petition shows that William entered service in 1780 for a six months period. He served under Colonels Roebuck and Kimble and was in the Battle of Hanging Rock.

Biographical notes on William A Nelson state: "His grandparents, Daniel Nelson and Margaret Hood Nelson, were of English and Irish descent, respectively. The grandfather was a native of Maryland and was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He was a farmer by occupation and built the house in which his son, Robert and his grandson, William A., were born. He was the father of five sons, all of whom settled in South Carolina''

"Remarkably, Margaret Hood Nelson lived until 1840, age 84, and is buried in Salem Cemetery, Tipton, County, Tennessee. The only Nelson family that I could find in Tipton Co in 1840 was Nathaniel's group in which the census enumerator included a white female in the 50/70 age group. This has to be Margaret, with a friendly age adjustment. Although she still had children alive, with nice homes in South Carolina and North Carolina, she must have decided that she was interested in going West to Tennessee with her grandson, Nathaniel"

Notes for MARY JANE NELSON:
It was pointed out at a Smith Reunion in 1991, that Mary Jane and four of her sisters married two Smith brothers, and three Parker brothers, who were first cousins to each other In 1893, a good number of the Smiths, Parkers and Nelsons left Union County and resettled in Tattnall County, GA.
Notes for ZECHARIAH SMITH:
Zachariah and Mary Jane lived in Monroe, N.C. Prior to 1893, Zachariah went to Reidsville, GA. and purchased a farm and a big two story dwelling, where the present "Nelson Hotel" now stands. His oldest son Joesph and Daisy, his wife, and his daughter Lula, ran the dwelling as a "rooming house". Joseph and family, along with Lula were visiting the farm one Sunday, and the rooming house mysteriously burned. This house was purchased from a Mr. Folsom, who at that time was believed to have owned the "Tattnall Journal". The day that the structure burned, someone was seen crawling under the steps of the rooming house, and it was on that day that the house burned, and apparently was deliberately set on fire. An insurance company paid Zachariah for the damages, and he and two or three of this sons rebuilt the rooming house, and made it even larger to accommodate more roomers and boarders. Zachariah then named it "The Nelson Hotel", in honor of his wife, Mary Jane Nelson. Robert Nelson and his wife Katie ran the hotel for several years. After Robert died, his daughter, Blanche Nelson Sperry ran the hotel for another number of years.

In a conversation with Jerry Walker, after the 1997 Reunion, he told us that he had purchased the Hotel about seven years ago from the bank that was in the process of repossession. The bank intended to demolish it, and Jerry said that he and his wife could not stand to see such a beautiful old structure destroyed. The Walkers purchased it and live there while remodeling it to it's present form, a "Bed and Breakfast Inn". They are now attempting to have it listed on the "National Register of Historic Places". It still remains the "Nelson Hotel", (and the Walkers residence).

Zachariah lived to be 79 years old. He died on son Joseph's farm, in Dade City,FL after being dragged by a horse that "spooked" while he was plowing a field.
He is buried in the Reidsville Cemetery, along side his wife Mary Jane Nelson Smith.

Notes for LULA ADELINE SMITH:
Lula graduated from College at Valparaiso University, Indiana. She became a school teacher and taught for a number of years, and later became the Librarian at the Reidsville Library (by the high school). She was a devout Methodist, and there is a Sunday School Class named in her honor at the Methodist Church in Reidsville.
She is buried in the Reidsville Cemetery.

Notes for VERA ESTER SMITH:
Esther's parents had to wait until she was born before they could move to GA. When she was only a few days old, she and her mother were put upon a mattress and put aboard a boat and floated down the river to within 5 miles of Reidsville. When Esther was a teenager, the first telephone exchange was installed in the "Nelson Hotel", and she was the first "telephone operator" in Reidsville. A Mrs. Rogers lived across the street from the Methodist church. The Sikes had a grocery store and both had telephones installed. Esther put in the very first call through the switchboard that was made. Mrs. Roberts called the Sikes grocery and ordered a spool of thread, which was delivered to her.
Esther also had a dry goods store in Reidsville for a number of years, before selling it and moving to Florida.
